It's an occasionally surreal mythology filled with tales of hopelessly flawed characters, star-crossed lovers, drunks, fairy tales & bad trips. It exists in a world touched upon previously by Tom Waits, Hans Christian Anderson and Lloyd Kaufman while musically it follows the direct lineage of classic songwriting: Bowie, The Beatles & The Beach Boys' late 60s lysergia, early Roxy Music, Sabbath's bass heavy pulse & the crescendos of Arcade Fire.Recorded meticulously throughout 2009 by Bill Moriarty (Dr Dog / Man Man) and mixed by Rusty Santos (Animal Collective / Final Fantasy) it perfectly balances consistently catchy melodies with the raw energy of their trashcan pounding live show. Early ReviewsAllmusic (4 out of 5 stars)"...Songwriting that distills the golden pop sounds of England and America between approximately 1964 and 1975 into a dizzying, heady brew. The arrangements are uniformly inventive, splicing together bits and pieces of everything that's been waxed since the mid-'60s with a gleefully scattershot approach. The melodies are uniformly catchy; the vocals are marked by harmonies so sweet they could give you diabetes; and James Harvey's lead vocals are always surprising, full of unexpected starts and stops, one minute sweet and folky, the next an uncontained shriek of outrageous psychedelic delight. The same juxtapositions abound in the arrangements... their penchant for rhythmic noise and oddball vocals suggests a rock suite as much as a random collection of songs." // more The Deli (March CD of the Month) "There are some highlights here, like the infectious lead single "Even Think" and the gypsy stomp of "Sosey and Dosey", but it's more accurate to say that every song is a highlight. The greatest accomplishment of Born and Thrown on a Hook is that it works well as an album." // more Chicagoist "They have what seem to be an unending number of hooks up their paisley sleeves but they're unwilling to allow them to roll out in any obvious fashion. Usually when a band throws all sorts of curve balls in the path of super-catchy melodies we suspect they're embarrassed by the songs' accessibility, but in the case of Drink Up Buttercup these willful barriers help accentuate just how unrelenting the songs are on their journey to burrow in and make your head their home." // more AbsolutePunk "fun, catchy, explosive and rich" // more eMUSIC "Whether it be the racing organ line in "Even Think" or the tinny keyboard backing to "Young Ladies," like the title might suggest, there's no shortage of hooks here." // more Philadelphia Weekly "...it truly does live up to, and often exceeds, the advance hype..." // more Brightest Young Things "...buy their new record and it will get stuck in your iPod forever and you will always listen to it when you are high and then you'll quit smoking and still listen to it all the time." // more Philadelphia City Paper "an absolute blast" // more Pasta Primavera "Drink Up Buttercup's debut album Born and Thrown On A Hook is almost definitely going to be residing in my "Best of 2010 Albums" list at the end of the year. I know that's a bit hasty…and bold, but when I listen to this album I just feel energized… It’s like reliving the history of rock and roll and perhaps even re-inventing it a bit." // more Stark Online "Despite its broad reach, Born and Thrown on a Hook holds together as an album, solidified by Buttercups' effusive passion for music, the joy they have playing it, and their exceptional ear for a finely crafted and expertly-executed song." // more Paper Trail "I miss the kind of music you can put on your headphones and sweat out a cup of coffee to. It reminds me of being in college, walking no less than top speed to campus with 20lbs of textbooks on my back, driven by Hamilton Leithauser's (The Walkmen) potency and the firm belief that life was going to be effing amazing. You know? Arcade Fire's Funeral came out that year too, and the ethereal energy buzz was so fresh... Now, over five years later, this buzz comes back full force whilst listening to Drink Up Buttercup." // more Blogcritics "...a rollicking disc of smart-pop: a collection of energetically neurotic psychedelic/glam/art rock..." // more Guilt Free Pleasures "...noisey, catchy, full of mischief and ruckus... BUY IT IN MARCH. Ok? Ok." // more The Lightning Collective "The music hits you so incredibly hard, you’re really not too sure if you’ve been sent into a coma and this is all some lucid dream or maybe you just dropped several dozen hits of acid." // more Blalock's Indie/Rock Playlist "The new album is quite spectacular and will likely spend a good portion of the next few months on high rotation over here." // more |
